IELTS Score Calculator & Band Estimator
What Is the IELTS Band Score System?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most popular English proficiency exam, accepted by over 11,000 organizations across 140 countries. It measures your ability in four skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking—and reports each as a band score from 0 to 9 in 0.5-point increments. Your overall band score is the arithmetic mean of these four scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band using specific IELTS rounding rules.
Understanding exactly how your overall score is calculated can help you set realistic targets, identify which sections to focus on, and determine whether you meet the requirements for your dream university or immigration program.
How IELTS Overall Score Is Calculated
The overall band score calculation is straightforward but the rounding can surprise test-takers:
- Add the four section scores together.
- Divide by 4 to get the raw average.
- Apply rounding: if the fractional part is .25 or above, round up to the next half band; if it is .75 or above, round up to the next whole band.
For example, if your scores are Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 7.0, the raw average is 6.625. Since .625 is ≥ .25 and < .75, the overall score rounds to 6.5.
This rounding system means that sometimes improving just one section by 0.5 can push your overall score to the next band—making targeted preparation extremely valuable.

IELTS Score Requirements by Country
United Kingdom
Top universities like Oxford and Cambridge typically require an overall band of 7.0–7.5 with no section below 7.0. The UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) generally requires a minimum of 5.5 overall with 5.5 in each component for below-degree-level courses, and 6.0–6.5 for degree-level programs.
Canada
For Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker), a CLB 7 corresponds to approximately IELTS 6.0 in each section (L: 6.0, R: 6.0, W: 6.0, S: 6.0). Higher CLB levels (9 and above) can earn significantly more Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, with L: 8.0, R: 7.0, W: 7.0, S: 7.0 for CLB 9.
Australia
The skilled migration program requires a minimum of 6.0 in each band for "Competent English." Scoring 7.0 in each band ("Proficient") awards 10 additional points, while 8.0 in each ("Superior") awards 20 points—a game-changer for your points test.
United States
While TOEFL is more common, many U.S. universities now accept IELTS. Graduate programs typically require 6.5–7.0 overall, with top programs expecting 7.0+ and no section below 6.5.
Strategies to Improve Your IELTS Score
- Identify your weakest section — the calculator shows exactly where your average is being dragged down.
- Focus on Writing — statistically, Writing has the lowest global average (5.5) and is the hardest section to improve, but structured practice with Task 1 and Task 2 templates yields gains.
- Practice under timed conditions — IELTS is as much about time management as it is about English proficiency.
- Use official practice tests — Cambridge IELTS books provide the closest experience to the real exam.
- Record yourself speaking — self-review helps identify pronunciation issues and hesitation patterns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a 0.5 overall score?
Technically yes, but in practice, any test-taker who completes all sections will score at least a 1.0 in each. The lowest practical overall score is around 2.0–3.0.
Do universities look at individual scores or just overall?
Most institutions set both an overall minimum and section minimums. For example, a university may require 7.0 overall with no section below 6.5. Meeting the overall but failing a section minimum typically means you do not meet the requirement.
How long are IELTS scores valid?
IELTS results are valid for two years from the test date. After that, most organizations will require you to retake the exam.
